NOMAD MIX SERIES | NO. #012 BY JORDAN EVANS

We walked away from the shop and began talking with music producer Jordan Evans trying to understand why his hometown of Pickering, and the neighbouring Toronto suburbs, have given rise to so many musical talents. From his original mentor Boi-1da, who was most recently affiliated with 7 out 17 track’s on If You’re Reading This Its Too Late, and Evans’ frequent collaborator Matthew Burnett - both of whom are residents of Pickering, to OVO Sound’s T-Minus in Ajax. In addition, there's Jordan Ullman, one half of Majid Jordan, from Unionville along with up and coming prodigal son Daniel Caesar from Oshawa, and PartyNextDoor from Mississauga. Though far from exhaustive, this list is a pretty good indication that what seems like is coming out of Toronto, is actually stemming from just outside of it.

He paced around the empty parking lot where we were shooting as we riffed back and forth. Maybe it is the shitty public transit, or perhaps just the general lack of anything to do that, counterintuitively, spurs creativity in a feverish hustle to get the fuck out of the suburbs and into the city. Regardless the source, it seems to have been a domino effect; one good musical talent in the vicinity has led to a next, producing a slew of familiar names - Drew Howard, Rochelle Jordan, Sean Leon, Roy Woods - many of whom are heard on this mix created exclusively for Nomad. Evans’ himself can be seen as one of the first products of this phenomenon.

After being introduced to Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels while still in high school the mentorship has grown into a partnership - resulting in the two regularly collaborating in beats and production. Far from Pickering High now, Jordan has amassed a Grammy, Juno, and Much Music Award along with countless words of praise for work with artists ranging from Eminem and Drake to Freddie Gibbs and PartyNextDoor.

Featuring only artists and producers from Toronto, the exclusive Nomad mix showcases those who, in Jordan’s opinion, are next to break through or currently breaking through into international success.
